Presentation : Bali is one of Indonesia’s 13 000 islands. It is located between Java and Lombok, has an area of 5 637 km², and a population of about 3 million people. Its capital is Denpasar. Often assimilated to a little paradise, it has preserved a vibrating and authentic culture interwoven with its people’s religion : hinduism. The Balinese are of an irrevocable kindness who appear to have been given the gift of time: processions and dances succeed each other day after day, and carefully prepared offerings are placed on doorsteps and small altars to honor the Gods and the Ancestors.
Danses (Lelong, Kecak, Barong…) : are rythmically accompanied by the famous Gamelan orchestras (traditional xylophones) and can last for hours in perfect communion with the spectators and the honored divinities.

Security and theftl : Bali remains a very safe island, as long as one is reasonably careful !

Climate : the rainy season stretches between January and April. The rest of the year is hot and humid although the temperature becomes more pleasant as one moves inland into the hills. The average temperature is 26°C.
Time : local time is +6 hours GMT in the Summer and +7 hours in the Winter.
Passport and visa : Your passport must be valid at least six months past the date you plan to leave Bali. With that, you can either of the two options below: |

Vaccinations : none are obligatory. Good news : there is no Malaria in Bali ! only sunburns are to be feared, so don’t forget sun screen !
Drugs : in Bali (like elsewhere in Indonesia), drugs are dangerous. Avoid them.
Change : the local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah. In January 2011, 1 euro gave you 12.000 rupiah. Euros can be changed everywhere. Credit cards are also accepted in most establishments, it is harder to use travellers’ checks. Currency converter.
Airport taxes : There is an international tax payable upon departure : 150,000 rupiahs.
Luggage : travel light, as you will want to make numerous purchases. Souvenirs are both cheap and attractive.
Cuisine and restaurants : food is excellent, and cheap. Nasi-goreng (fried rice) is the national dish. Sates (skewers) are eaten with a (duck). You will find plenty of seafood, and the more adventurous can taste frog legs! Fruit are delicious, eaten fresh or mixed in a juice or smoothie. Local beer (Bintang) is excellent. Beware of tap water, it is not drinkable, and avoid ice cubes. Restaurants are generally cheap, especially warungs, local open air eateries, where the food is usually very good.
You must usually add 21% of taxes to displayed prices.
Bargaining : everything needs bargaining, but with a smile ! Divide prices by 2, 3 or even more, and avoid appearing in a hurry.
Transport : bémo (public minibus) and taxis are very affordable, but better negociate the price, even when there is a meter !
